Tidio (Lyro)

Tidio (Lyro): an accessible starting point for Shopify stores

Tidio pairs a live chat helpdesk with Lyro, its AI agent. Lyro answers from your knowledge base, hands conversations to a human, and lets you edit answers and follow analytics. For a small store, that covers the most frequent questions without rebuilding the support stack.

The Shopify order status action brings payment, fulfillment, items and tracking into the chat. Refunds and order edits are a different matter: Tidio’s native Shopify actions are tools for human operators, not proof that Lyro issues refunds on its own.

Read the pricing page carefully. USD 32.50 is a monthly equivalent billed annually, the first 50 Lyro conversations are a one-off allowance rather than a monthly free tier, and the page may display euros or another currency depending on your location.

Gorgias

Gorgias: a helpdesk built around Shopify orders

Gorgias is a helpdesk designed for ecommerce, with an AI agent focused on order tracking, returns and human handoff. Its Shopify integration brings orders and customer data into each ticket, so agents and AI work from the same context.

The entry plan is not the full story. Starter, at USD 40 a month with AI added, lacks Actions and brand guardrails. Actions such as cancelling an order or applying a discount start on Basic, and their scope still depends on integration and rules.

Pricing mixes helpdesk tickets and automated interactions. Extra Basic tickets cost USD 40 per 100, and the published AI unit rate is USD 1 on monthly billing. Ask for the exact counting rules and overage terms in writing before you commit.

Fin by Intercom

Fin by Intercom: outcome pricing and structured procedures

Fin connects to live Shopify catalog, order and stock data. Order status, returns, policy questions and order changes run through Procedures and connections, while humans get a shared inbox with full context. Guidance, testing and monitoring tools help you control behavior.

An outcome is not always a fully autonomous resolution. It covers a confirmed resolution, a customer who asks nothing more, or a completed Procedure, which can include a handoff. It is charged once per conversation, and ecommerce product recommendations count too.

Fin can run on another helpdesk at USD 0.99 per outcome, with a minimum commitment such as 50 outcomes. However, Intercom states that Fin’s Sales and Ecommerce capabilities are not currently available on other platforms. Confirm the exact scope in your contract.

Typewise

Typewise: AI agent with action logs and human approval

Typewise handles order lookups and policy execution with action logs, a pause option and human approval steps. It connects to CRM and ERP systems. We did not verify a native Shopify returns connector, so ask for a demonstration on your exact stack.

Billing follows the work done. A full resolution counts as one unit, partial work followed by human approval as half a unit, and an unresolved handoff or flagged incorrect answer is free. Growth packages bring the unit price toward USD 1, not at every volume.

Growth adds five users and all digital channels, with each extra user at USD 89 a month. The 14-day trial includes 100 resolution credits and 10 operator credits without a card, enough to test refund approvals on realistic scenarios.

Expertise AI

Expertise AI: a custom deployment, not a plugin

Expertise AI builds agents from customer knowledge, CRM data, workflows and approvals, with human handoff across chat, voice and phone. Every plan includes Sales, CX and Custom agents, and every tier is priced on quote rather than on a public price list.

Enterprise adds private infrastructure, and Unlimited adds unlimited credits, forward-deployed engineers and data residency. Read these as quote terms, not a blanket promise of free unlimited everything: hosting, capacity and conditions are defined in your contract.

Its positioning leans toward sales, so treat it as a conditional alternative rather than a default ecommerce choice. Before buying, ask for proof of the Shopify, order management and returns integration you need. We found no verified native cancel or refund action.

Three workflows to define before choosing

Start from your tickets, not from feature lists. Write down what the AI may read, what it may change and when it must hand over.

  • Order status: verify identity with an order number and email, then give read-only access to payment, fulfillment and tracking. No edits at this stage, and a clear answer when tracking data is missing.
  • Returns: let the AI check eligibility against your policy (return window, product condition, exclusions), then route the decision to a person for approval. Test edge cases such as final sale items, gifts and partial returns.
  • Sensitive cases: damaged goods, disputes, angry customers or fraud signals go to a human with the full conversation, the order data and what the AI already tried, so the customer never has to repeat the story.

What a month really costs

Budget five layers: seats or base plan, usage, channels, integration work and the human time spent reviewing AI work.

  • Hypothetical example: Typewise Starter with one user, 100 full and 20 partial resolutions costs 99 + 2 × (100 + 0.5 × 20) = USD 319, before extra operator credits and tax.
  • Same idea on Fin: 100 billable outcomes at USD 0.99 make USD 99, plus one Essential seat at USD 29 with annual billing, about USD 128 per month equivalent under an annual seat commitment. This is not a matched comparison and names no winner.
  • Tidio counts Lyro conversations, Gorgias counts tickets plus automated interactions. These units differ, so avoid ranking tools by headline price and model your own volume with each vendor’s definitions.

A 14-day pilot you can actually run

Use this proposed 14-day pilot to collect initial evidence on your own tickets. Extend it if volumes are low or important exceptions have not occurred.

  • Days 1 to 3: build a baseline of 20 to 30 anonymized, representative tickets (order status, returns, edge cases) and record how your team answers them today.
  • Days 4 to 10: run the AI read-only, then open a few limited actions with a rollback plan. Keep human approval on anything that moves money or changes an order.
  • Days 11 to 14: review reopened tickets, errors, CSAT, human minutes spent and the actual bill. Deflection alone hides wrong answers and costly handoffs.

Keep your people on what matters

Done well, automation frees the owner and the team from repetitive checks rather than replacing them.

  • Freed time goes to customer relationships, supplier issues, complex cases and product improvements based on what customers keep asking.
  • General assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude can help draft return policies, analyze anonymized tickets and write test cases for your pilot.
  • Codex or Claude Code can help developers build connectors and tests. None of them is a plug-and-play agent authorized to issue refunds: that permission belongs in your helpdesk, behind approval rules.

FAQ

Which AI tool is best for ecommerce support?

There is no universal winner. A small Shopify store may start with Tidio (Lyro) or Gorgias, teams with structured procedures may prefer Fin or Typewise, and custom processes may justify Expertise AI. Match the tool to your workflows and volume.

Can an AI agent provide 24/7 customer support?

It can answer around the clock on documented questions such as order status or return policy. Outside business hours, sensitive cases still need a clear promise of when a person will reply, not an improvised answer.

How do these tools connect to Shopify?

Tidio, Gorgias and Fin document Shopify connections for orders and customer data. For Typewise and Expertise AI we did not verify a native returns connector, so ask for a demonstration on your own store and order system.

Can AI issue refunds automatically?

Some plans allow order actions, but we recommend human approval for refunds. Tidio’s Shopify actions are operator tools, Gorgias Actions start on Basic, and Typewise counts partial work approved by a human as half a unit.

What does AI support really cost per month?

Add the base plan or seats, usage units, channels, integration work and human review time. Units differ by vendor, so model your own ticket volume on each official pricing page and confirm overage terms in writing.

Is there a free AI customer support tool?

Tidio offers 50 Lyro conversations once, and Typewise a 14-day trial with 100 resolution credits. These are useful starting points. Check recurring quotas, required integrations and operating costs before deciding whether a free allowance can cover your volume.

Can I just use ChatGPT or Claude?

They help with drafting policies, analyzing anonymized tickets and preparing test cases. On their own they are not connected to your orders and have no authorized refund workflow, so they complement a support tool rather than replace it.

Can I keep my current helpdesk?

Often, yes. Fin can run on another helpdesk at USD 0.99 per outcome with a minimum commitment, though its Ecommerce features stay Intercom-only. Typewise and Expertise AI connect to existing systems: check integrations before migrating anything.
