Free ChatGPT Alternatives in 2026: 7 Options by Task

A free ChatGPT alternative can mean three things: a second everyday assistant, a search tool that shows its sources, or one place to try several models. The seven services below meet these needs in different ways. Check the free access conditions before you move your work.

This is a documentary review of official help and pricing pages, read on 26 September 2026. We did not test the tools ourselves or run benchmarks, so this guide reports no measured quality or accuracy. Plans change often, and the linked pages are the reference.

Free access, paid plans and APIs

Free access is not a blanket guarantee of unlimited use. Paid plans raise limits or unlock features, and developer APIs are billed separately. Running an open model yourself is another route: the software can be free, but the hardware and hosting are not. For comparison, ChatGPT’s own Free plan includes web search, and answers that use it may include citations (OpenAI).

Claude

Claude can search the web and returns source links. Free usage limits apply to searches and to fetched pages. Research is a separate capability on paid plans (web search, Research).

DeepSeek

DeepSeek keeps its web chat and app separate from its API, which is paid and priced by usage (DeepSeek, API pricing). It is worth trying as a second chat assistant, but the official pages we read do not promise unlimited free use.

Gemini

Gemini can show related sources. Google notes that double-check links are not necessarily the sources used to generate the answer. Limits depend on your plan (sources, limits). Deep Research uses Google Search by default and can use other sources you select. Higher plans raise its limits (Deep Research).

Mistral Vibe (formerly Le Chat)

Mistral Vibe is the new name for Le Chat. Its free plan covers quick answers, search and simple tasks, with usage limits. Enterprise deployment is a separate offer (Vibe, renaming). A European provider does not settle data questions on its own, so read the terms of your plan.

Perplexity

Perplexity has Free and paid plans. Pro raises access to research, models and uploads, and the API is billed separately (plans). As with every tool here, a citation shows you where to look. It does not prove that the source says what the summary claims.

Grok

Grok from xAI has a free entry point on the web and on mobile (xAI). We found no official number for the free quota, so note when you hit a limit during your own test.

Poe

Poe offers models from several providers in one service. Non-paying users get points every day. Each message uses a varying number of points, and unused points do not roll over (Poe FAQ). It is useful for trying several models on the same prompt.

How to evaluate them

1. Pick one real task you repeat every week and write the prompt once.
2. Run the same prompt in two or three candidates on the same day.
3. For each factual claim, open the cited link, find the exact passage and check its date.
4. Note when a free limit appears and whether it stops you finishing the task.
5. Check that you can copy or export the result in the format you need.
6. Read the data terms of the plan you would actually use, especially for work files.
